Time Tone

Sound installation using approximately 600 disaster prevention speakers

“Time Tone” is a sound installation that utilizes approximately 600 emergency broadcast speakers installed at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Created by sound artist evala and researcher/musician Itsuki Doi, this work can only be heard at specific times that conform to the “temporal time system”, which is based on sunrise and sunset. In this way, the piece serves not only as a sound installation but also as a “time signal” for visitors, producing different sonic expressions that vary with the weather and location.

『Time Tone』は、大阪・関西会場に設置された約600台の防災スピーカーを使った音響作品です。サウンドアーティストevalaと研究者・音楽家の土井樹によるこの本作は、現代の時計のように毎時00分に時を告げるのではなく、日の出と日没を基準とする「不定時法」という江戸時代の時刻制度に準拠した時刻にだけ聴くことができ、気象や場所に応じて異なる音の表情を生み出します。
