開催中の大阪・関西万博にて、サウンドアーティストevalaと研究者・音楽家の土井樹による「時報」が体験いただけます。

万博会場に設置された約600台の防災スピーカーを使った時報型音響作品『Time Tone』。本作は、現代の時計のように毎時00分に時を告げるのではなく、日の出と日没を基準とする「不定時法」という江戸時代の時刻制度に準拠した時刻にだけ聴くことができます。

時報は、「See by Your Ears」で作品のはじまりにシグネチャーとして用いられている音を基調とし、その音が鳴る瞬間の気象情報をもとに変調を加えられた音と残響が重ねられ、全体の響きを形成しています。

“万博の会場はとても広い。広い敷地にたくさんのスピーカーが点在しているため、仮に同時刻に音を再生しても、音速の限界によって耳に届くタイミングにずれが生じる。

空気中の音速は気温に依存し、一般的に15℃で約340m/sとされる。たとえば会場の象徴的な建造物である「大屋根」は直径がおよそ615mあるため、その両端にあるスピーカーから同時に音を鳴らしても、片端の音が聞こえるまで最大で1.8秒ほどかかる計算になる。

通常、このような遅延や反響は、元の音源を正しく聴衆に届けられない音響の乱れと見なされる場合もあるが、本作品においては会場全体を巻き込み、場所ごとに異なる響きへと変換している。つまり再生される音がたとえシンプルなシグナルであったとしても、音が空気中を伝わる「遅さ」のおかげで、音は土地に空間化され、複雑なひと塊の音響となる。”

“Time Tone” is a sound installation that utilizes approximately 600 emergency broadcast speakers installed at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Created by sound artist evala and researcher/musician Itsuki Doi, this work can only be heard at specific times that conform to the “temporal time system” (futeijihō), which is based on sunrise and sunset. In this way, the piece serves not only as a sound installation but also as a “time signal” (jihō) for visitors, producing different sonic expressions that vary with the weather and location.

The core sound is the long, decaying sine wave signature from evala’s “See by Your Ears” project, layered with sounds with a sharp attack and deep reverberations. These layers are modulated by a program to form the overall resonance. The modulation is based on weather information captured at the moment the signal sounds, which ranges from basic values like temperature and humidity to wind speed, solar intensity, and other derived meteorological indices.
